FAQ

Are there other services like Airmedic in Quebec?

Airmedic is the only company in Quebec that offers emergency helicopter and airplane medical services free of charge to its members.

Why should I become an Airmedic member when the government already offers hospital plane service?

The Quebec government's hospital plane service is an important component of the province's healthcare system, but hospital planes do not carry out individual emergency medical rescue operations. Hospital planes are designed to transport several patients at a time. They operate as a shuttle service throughout Quebec, which can mean substantial wait-times before patients arrive at the hospital.

Are Airmedic services covered by RAMQ or SAAQ?

No. Contrary to popular belief, Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) and Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) do not cover any helicopter or airplane medical rescue service.

Can I call Airmedic from anywhere, at any time of day or night?

Yes. Airmedic's emergency phone line is open 24/7, 365 days a year. Call us at any time to get the emergency medical care you need, anywhere in Quebec.

I'm an Airmedic member and I'm going on an expedition soon with a friend who isn't a member. Can friends use my coverage if they need emergency medical attention?

Like all insurance policies, your Airmedic coverage is nontransferable and nonrefundable. Airmedic will assist your friends whether they are covered or not, but in the latter case they will be responsible for the full cost of the intervention.

My spouse and I have a cottage in a remote area, next to a lake, but neither of us is into extreme sports or other high-risk activities. Is Airmedic coverage right for us?

Many people are under the false impression that Airmedic is only for people who like living on the edge. Not true: Airmedic is a fast and effective emergency medical service for anyone staying or residing in Quebec. Think about it: What would happen if you had a heart attack? How long would it take to get the specialized emergency medical attention you need? Answering this question should give you all the reason you need to sign up right away.

What criteria does Airmedic use to decide whether helicopter or airplane medical services are needed?

When we receive an emergency call, it only takes a few seconds to determine the quickest and most effective way to intervene based on the patient's condition and location. Airmedic intervenes when waiting is not an option.

Can the patient refuse to be taken to the hospital chosen by Airmedic?

Airmedic is committed to transporting patients to the specialized hospital best equipped to deal with their condition—not necessarily the closest facility.

If I have a car accident, can I request assistance from Airmedic instead of a traditional ambulance?

Time is the deciding factor. In cities, for example, a traditional ambulance can be dispatched to the accident site and then Airmedic can take over to fly the accident victim to the most appropriate specialized hospital, which may not be the closest facility.

In case of emergency, who should I call first: Airmedic or 911?

If you feel that you are in need of Airmedic's services, call us immediately at 1-877-999-3322. You can also call 911 and put in a request for Airmedic emergency services at any time.

Airmedic doesn't have a base in my region. How can you guarantee me a fast response time in case of emergency?

Every base has a radius of operation of approximately 350 km, allowing Airmedic to effectively cover all of Quebec.

Can I call Airmedic even if I'm not a member?

Yes. Even though Airmedic is a private company, and our operations are paid for through membership fees, our mission is to preserve and save lives. You should never hesitate to call Airmedic if you need help, because you can't put a price on your life. However, keep in mind that when non-members use Airmedic, they should expect to be billed for services rendered.

Can I accompany the person rescued by Airmedic?

Unfortunately, space on board is severely limited. To ensure optimal conditions for emergency care during transport, and in the interest of the person receiving care, patients may be accompanied only under exceptional circumstances.

Can foreign tourists get Airmedic coverage?

Yes. Airmedic coverage is available to anyone visiting or residing in the province of Quebec who purchases annual protection. We also offer temporary seven-day coverage designed specifically for travellers. Foreign tourists should note that Airmedic services are available only in the province of Quebec.

My dog always comes with me on hunting and fishing trips. If I have to be transported by helicopter, can it accompany me?

Airmedic will take the necessary steps to make sure your dog is safe. However, for obvious health and safety reasons, animals are not allowed on board.

Do I need to have my membership card on me at the time of rescue?

You don't need to have your card with you to be rescued by Airmedic. We do, however, recommend keeping your card in a safe place so you can quickly find the emergency phone number should you need it.

The human body responds differently to treatment at elevation. Are Airmedic rescue teams trained accordingly?

Every member of Airmedic's medical staff has completed 140 hours of specialized aeromedical training.
