This testimony about a medical evacuation by helicopter is intended to thank the people who took care of me, who reassured me, and especially the young woman who held my hand throughout the procedure.
A severe allergic reaction… in the middle of the forest
July 23 will remain an unforgettable day for my partner and me. We were at our cottage early in the morning when I noticed that my face was swollen. Both my eyes were completely closed due to wasp stings I had received the day before. I am allergic, but I didn’t know it yet.
Then the symptoms quickly worsened: numb tongue, itchy hands, and difficulty breathing. My partner considered driving me to the hospital. However, I felt too weak to endure a two-hour drive. Fortunately, we had a satellite phone. He contacted Airmedic’s emergency center to request a medical evacuation by helicopter.
Fast and reassuring air transport
While we waited, the coordinator stayed in touch with us to monitor my condition. Shortly after, I heard the sound of the helicopter approaching. It landed at the end of our driveway.
An air transport nurse entered accompanied by a paramedic. Both immediately reassured me and administered first aid. Then they transported me aboard the medical helicopter. During the flight, the nurse held my hand the entire time. This intervention in a remote area was a huge comfort to me.
Vital and humane care
Seventeen minutes later, I was already in the hands of the staff at Chicoutimi Hospital. The doctor confirmed that I would never have been able to make the journey on my own. This emergency helicopter evacuation most certainly saved my life.
I am deeply grateful to Airmedic. Thanks to their rapid response, expertise, and compassion, I avoided major complications.
Thank you, Airmedic. You made all the difference.
