For a safe vacation
Do you know about carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO), also called the silent killer, is a toxic gas that is invisible and odorless. It is dangerous to your health and can be fatal within minutes. This gas does not irritate the eyes or respiratory tract. Which is why an alarm is essential to detect and alert you to its presence. However, certain symptoms may indicate a CO leak or poisoning.
Common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning
You may be exposed to CO if you experience the following symptoms:
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Vision problems
- Chest pain
- Vomiting
In some cases, memory, attention, and behavioral issues may appear after a latency period of 2 to 40 days.
Identifying sources of carbon monoxide
CO sources are more common than you might think. Carbon monoxide poisoning can result from various appliances and vehicles. Improper use or malfunction is often the cause of a CO leak, so caution around these devices is important.
- Motorized vehicles: lawnmowers, generators, ATVs, cars, snowmobiles
- Heating appliances: furnace, wood stoves, fireplace, space heater
- Natural gas and propane appliances: barbecue, camping stove, oil lamps, water heater
- Outdoor tools
What to do in case of a leak?
If you experience symptoms of CO poisoning or your alarm goes off, leave the area immediately. If you are an Airmedic member, contact our emergency line immediately at 1‑877‑999‑3322. Otherwise, call 9‑1‑1 or contact the Quebec Poison Centre at 1‑800‑463‑5060. Wait for authorization before returning indoors. It is important to have any potentially faulty equipment checked.
If you are in a remote area without access to mobile networks, consider investing in a satellite phone. Finally, prevention is always better than cure. Make sure to inspect your equipment regularly and install a carbon monoxide detector in enclosed spaces. This way, you can avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
