SAINT-HUBERT, QC, May 29, 2023 /CNW/ – The Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix organization is turning to Airmedic and Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur-de-Montréal to provide critical care and ensure emergency helicopter medical transport. From June 15 to 18, dozens of physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, and pilots will collaborate to deliver healthcare that meets the highest quality standards.
” We are proud of the trust the Montréal Grand Prix organization and Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur place in us. This long-standing partnership highlights their satisfaction with Airmedic’s helicopter medical transport services. It also underscores our expertise and professionalism, ” said Sophie Larochelle, Chief Executive Officer of Airmedic.
“The trauma team at Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur-de-Montréal has been providing medical care at the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix for more than 30 years. We know we can rely on highly qualified experts to carry out a medical evacuation if an accident occurs,” said Dr. Ronald Denis, Medical Director of the Trauma Program at Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur-de-Montréal.
A Strategic Setup for Helicopter Medical Transport

Two BK117 helicopters from Airmedic’s fleet will be dedicated to the event. At all times, one helicopter will remain stationed on the helipad near the track hospital. The second, positioned at Mare au Diable, will be ready for a simultaneous second evacuation if required. This constant presence is part of an emergency plan developed jointly by the three partners, demonstrating the seriousness and commitment of each organization.
In addition, five intensive simulations and training sessions were held to familiarize the trauma team with Airmedic’s aircraft and strengthen their in-flight skills. Through this preparation, rapid and safe patient evacuation becomes a concrete reality. This type of collaboration clearly demonstrates how essential helicopter medical transport is during international sporting events.
According to FIA requirements, an emergency helicopter service must be fully functional and available at all times. Without this aerial medical coverage, the race cannot take place. Therefore, this requirement reinforces the importance of the Québec government’s initiative to establish a structured network of specialized air care accessible to the entire population. Airmedic reiterates its support for this government project, just as it supports the Canadian Grand Prix each year.
