Why should I be an Airmedic member considering that the government offers hospital plane services?
The Quebec government's hospital plane service is an important component of the province's healthcare system, but hospital planes do not carry out individual emergency medical rescue operations. However, hospital planes are designed to transport several patients at a time, operating as a shuttle service throughout Quebec. This means that there are substantial wait-times before patients arrive at the hospital. Airmedic however is currently the only private business in Quebec to specialize in airborne medical rescues.
Are Airmedic services covered by RAMQ or SAAQ?
No. Contrary to popular belief, Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) and Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) do not cover any helicopter or airplane medical rescue services.
Can I call Airmedic from anywhere, at any time?
Airmedic offers airborne emergency services day and night throughout Quebec. Our Call Centre is open 24/7/365. Our pilots are ready at all times.
Does my Airmedic protection include interhospital transfers?
No. Airmedic protection guarantees you with an emergency medical rescue. Our interhospital transfer service is only offered to Quebec health care centres. In the event where you are hospitalized and your condition requires a transfer, the hospital will decide on the appropriate means of transportation and, if need be, they will contact us to request a plane or helicopter transportation.
I am an Airmedic member and I'm going on an expedition soon with a friend who isn't a member. Can friends use my coverage if they need emergency medical attention?
Your Airmedic coverage is non-transferable and non-refundable. If your friend doesn’t need annual coverage, a 7-day or 14-day temporary coverage is available. It is important to remember however that, unlike our annual protection service which covers all of Quebec, the Temporary Protection Package is only valid south of the 51st parallel.
My spouse and I have a cottage in a remote area, next to a lake, but neither of us are into extreme sports or other high-risk activities. Is Airmedic coverage right for us?
Many people are under the false impression that Airmedic is only for people who like living on the edge. This is not true. Airmedic is a fast and effective emergency medical service for anyone staying or residing in Quebec. Consider what would happen if you had a heart attack? How long would it take for you to receive specialized emergency medical attention? Your health is precious. Don’t take chances.
Is there a limit to the number of calls?
There is no restriction on the number of rescues that are covered by a membership. Members can make as many calls as they need.
Can the person being transported refuse to be taken to the hospital designated by Airmedic?
Airmedic’s commitment is to quickly transport the evacuee to a specialized hospital that is most suited to deal with their condition. Proximity is not always the main consideration.
In case of emergency, who should I call first: Airmedic or 911?
If you have Airmedic protection, we recommend you call us directly at 1 877 999-3322. If you do not have an Airmedic coverage, you should then call 9-1-1.
How can I contact Airmedic from outside a cell phone service area?
Various satellite communication devices are available on the market. Several companies specialize in the sale of this type of device.
How do I alert Airmedic of an emergency using a SPOT device?
The SPOT device can connect you directly to our Emergency Call Centre using the SOS button located on the device. This service is strictly reserved for our members.
Can I accompany a person being rescued by Airmedic?
Unfortunately, space on board is very limited. To ensure there are the absolute best circumstances for emergency care during transport, and in the interest of the person receiving care, patients may be accompanied only under exceptional circumstances.
Can foreign tourists get Airmedic coverage?
Yes. Various Airmedic coverage options are available to anyone visiting or residing in the province of Quebec according to their needs. We offer a 7 day and a 14 day coverage package designed specifically for travellers. Please note that temporary coverage is only valid south of the 51st parallel and that annual membership is the only way of receiving emergency services everywhere in the province.
My dog always comes with me on hunting and fishing trips. If I have to be evacuated by helicopter, can it accompany me?
Airmedic will take the necessary steps to make sure your dog is safe. However, for obvious health and safety reasons, animals are not allowed on board.
Do I need to have my membership card on me at the time of rescue?
You don’t need to have your card with you to be rescued by Airmedic. We do, however, recommend keeping your card in a safe place so you can quickly find the emergency phone number should you need it.
Can Airmedic provide rescue services at night?
Since March 2016, the Airmedic team has been equipped for night flights due to the accreditation it has received from Transport Canada for purchasing specialized equipment, namely the ANVIS 9 night vision goggles. Prior to this purchase, Airmedic pilots could only fly in places where there was a lot of light. However, the night vision goggles now allow us to safely land anywhere and at anytime, provided that the weather conditions are acceptable.

Does Airmedic reimburse ambulance fees?
Airmedic is responsible for the cost of transportation incurred by ground ambulances if it was organized and mandated by the mission coordinator. This decision is based on criteria developed by the company, and takes into consideration the patient’s medical needs. This criteria also complies with operational requirements. In the case where Airmedic is responsible, the ambulance service’s bill is sent directly to Airmedic for payment.
Does AIRMEDIC offer transportation services to people waiting for organ transplants?
In the past, Airmedic has provided this service on a few occasions. However, given the costs involved in this type of transportation and the unfortunate abuse of this service, since June 20 2016 we have decided to only continue to provide this service to members in good standing. These members are charged for the cost of this operation depending on the distance that needs to be covered.
