We always recommend that Airmedic members contact our emergency centre directly in case of need. Not only can our team, which includes medical managers, offer you medical advice, they can also deploy the appropriate resource and monitor the transport of the injured person from A to Z.
Unfortunately, space on board is very limited. In order to allow emergency care to be administered during transport, and in the interests of the person being rescued, we only allow an accompanying person in exceptional cases. This is at the discretion of the medical team on site.
Airmedic operates a fleet of medical airplanes and helicopters that are used for evacuation and air transport. However, the company can also deploy ground ambulances and call on partners depending on the situation of the casualty, the location of the accident, and the most appropriate hospital to receive the patient.
Airmedic recommends the use of voice satellite phones and two-way satellite communication devices for exchanging messages. These devices enable us to be in constant dialogue with you in an emergency situation so as to obtain the information essential for deploying emergency help. Even if you configure Airmedic’s contact details in your settings, devices using a third-party call centre do not allow Airmedic to be in contact with you when you press the SOS button. Your SOS message and location will be forwarded to a private call centre, which will redirect the call according to their procedures. Airmedic will not receive the message. This is why Airmedic does not recommend those style devices that can only relay your GPS coordinates by pressing an SOS button.
Yes. From local first responders to helicopter rental services to the Sûreté du Québec, Airmedic can call on external resources to provide ground or air transport, depending on the needs, condition, and location of an injured person. Airmedic deploys the appropriate resource according to the patient’s condition and the resource’s speed of response in reaching the patient.
A mission can last from a few hours to several hours, depending on your location, the resource deployed, transportation and the patient’s destination. Airmedic provides day-and-night service. No matter what time of day you call, Airmedic is available to coordinate a medical evacuation or transport.
We strongly recommend that you identify potential helipads near your place of business to facilitate emergency response. Having these helipads on hand helps to speed up the response and deployment of medical teams. To set up your helipads, contact [email protected].
Yes, Airmedic protects its members day and night. Airmedic operates day and night thanks to Transport Canada accreditation for our pilots to wear night-vision goggles, as well as IFR (instrument flight reference) certification, received in 2016 and 2017 respectively. In Quebec, Airmedic is the only private air ambulance company accredited for the use of night-vision goggles. Our pilots are trained and certified to use ANVIS-9 goggles. Night-vision goggles (NVGs) are ITAR-listed U.S.-origin defence equipment. They are controlled in Canada by the Controlled Goods Program administered by Public Services and Supply Canada, in accordance with the Defence Production Act. Considered military-grade weapons, they are always kept under lock and key.
Airmedic protection, whether for individuals, families or couples, is specifically designed to cover emergencies related to personal, recreational or leisure activities. This means that if you suffer an accident or medical emergency in a non-professional setting, such as on vacation, while outdoors or at home, you will be eligible for Airmedic’s emergency medical evacuation services.
However, this coverage does not extend to business or professional activities. If you are at work or carrying out tasks in the course of a business activity, the costs associated with medical evacuation or assistance will not be covered by your personal Airmedic coverage. To benefit from this type of coverage in a professional context, it is necessary to take out corporate coverage. For more information on corporate coverage, please contact us at [email protected].
Unlike other carriers who give priority to passenger transport, our aircraft are entirely dedicated to aeromedical evacuation. At all times, you’ll find one or two stretchers, depending on the aircraft’s configuration, and we also have incubators that we can position in the aircraft. Our aircraft are also equipped with the following items: – Monitor-defibrillators with external pacemaker; – Intelligent volumetric pumps and syringe pumps; – Immobilizing mattresses and vacuum splints; – Hamilton T1® ventilator; – Portable suction devices; – Trauma kits, including ventilatory and vital support, complete medication kits, emergency delivery kits; – Sources of piped medical oxygen; – Bacteria- and body fluid-proof interior lining.
Unlike other organizations that offer similar services, Airmedic provides air medical transport throughout Quebec. As an annual or seasonal Airmedic member, we’ll fly to your rescue, whether you’re below or above the 51st parallel. Depending on your location and medical condition, our dispatch centre will assess the best way to get to you as quickly as possible. Depending on the situation and your location, Airmedic may deploy an ambulance, charter another helicopter from another company, request support from the Sureté du Québec or the Canadian Armed Forces, etc.
Although they are an important link in the chain of medical services in Quebec, government hospital aircraft do not perform emergency medical rescues for individuals; their service is limited to evacuations between healthcare facilities. In Quebec, there is no government helicopter medical evacuation service. Although the Sureté du Québec owns helicopters, the police officers on board are trained as rescue and first responders, and their teams are not specialized in providing comprehensive emergency care and medication.
No. Contrary to popular belief, no airborne emergency medical services are covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec or the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.
No. Airmedic coverage provides you with prehospital emergency medical services before you arrive at a hospital or health centre. Our interhospital transfer services are intended for healthcare facilities in Quebec. In the event that you are hospitalized and your condition requires a transfer, the hospital will decide on the mode of transportation required and, if necessary, contact us to request air or helicopter transport.
Unlike other companies offering a similar service, Airmedic is not limited to one aircraft, enabling us to provide a reliable, round-the-clock service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Airmedic has set up a 24-hour coordination centre, where dedicated, trained staff receive calls and plan flights and medical assistance for callers. Military-grade night-vision goggles enable us to offer day and night service to our members. Airmedic never sleeps.
Airmedic protection has no restrictions on the number of free emergency calls. If you have any doubts about a medical situation, contact our coordination centre.
Yes, a number of resources are available to familiarize you with Airmedic services and prepare you for any emergency situation. From first aid to preparing a landing site, the safety card is the tool of choice to have with you. The pocket-sized, waterproof map is practical and easy to slip into your pocket, toolbox or even fishing box.
When the Airmedic helicopter is deployed, the crew on board includes a pilot, a co-pilot and a medical team consisting of two medical experts, a nurse, and a paramedic. Depending on the situation, other resources may also be deployed, such as a respiratory therapist or even a doctor.
Our aircraft are not equipped with winches for air rescues, which means we have to land. If space does not allow the helicopter to land, we can hover close to the ground. In this case, our medical team can be landed with their equipment to provide rapid care.
Airmedic helicopters can land at designated helipads and airports, often located close to hospitals, clinics or trauma centres. Helicopters can also land on improvised terrain, such as fields, open roads or other open spaces, provided safety conditions allow. Airmedic recommends an obstacle-free zone of 100 feet by 100 feet to ensure safe landing of its helicopters. This requirement ensures that helicopters can land and take off unhindered, minimizing risks to crew and patients.
No, it is not possible to choose the receiving hospital. Airmedic takes care of this selection. The decision is made on the basis of the patient’s medical situation, with the primary aim of ensuring the best possible care.
In Quebec, hospitals with heliports include Hôpital de Chicoutimi, Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke, and Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal. In addition, four new heliports are planned as part of Phase 1 of the government’s plan, at the Centre hospitalier régional de Lanaudière in Joliette, the Hôpital de Roberval, the McGill University Health Centre, and the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal.
When Airmedic needs to transport a patient to a hospital without a helipad, they can identify an airport or open area near the hospital and coordinate with local partners to arrange ambulance transport to the hospital.
Yes, certain weather conditions such as snowstorms, blizzards, heavy rain, thunderstorms, dense fog and strong winds can make flying dangerous. In addition, reduced visibility due to dense fog, heavy snowfall and darkness can pose navigation hazards. Technical or mechanical restrictions, such as mechanical breakdowns, technical problems and scheduled maintenance, can also bring aircraft to a standstill. However, Airmedic can always deploy resources to help the injured by using other types of transport or by calling on its partners.
Yes, anyone residing or staying in Quebec can obtain Airmedic coverage tailored to their needs. Temporary 7-day and 14-day coverage is available for vacationers. It’s important to note, however, that temporary coverage is only valid south of the 51st parallel, unlike annual coverage, which provides emergency assistance throughout Quebec. Please refer to your travel insurance policy for details.
You do not need to have your card with you to be rescued by Airmedic. However, we advise our members to keep it in a safe place, if only to obtain the emergency telephone number quickly in case of need. The coordination centre can retrieve your file with your full name (and validation information), your membership number, your address, etc.

In general, employers are required to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for their employees. For example, in Canada, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Bill C-21) requires employers to take every reasonable precaution to protect the health and safety of workers. This includes implementing appropriate emergency measures. While the law doesn’t specifically require the use of air evacuation and coordination services, they can be an integral part of your emergency measures, especially if you operate in high-risk environments or remote areas. They can help demonstrate that you are taking reasonable steps to protect the health and safety of your employees. Even if you are not legally required to use an emergency air transport service, incorporating such a service into your emergency plans can reinforce your compliance with the general requirements of occupational health and safety legislation.
