Will I have a fixed schedule?

In order to establish stability and predictability in the schedule, we plan a fixed timetable for our regular staff. We have three schedule models:

      • Full-time: A full-time schedule consists of two 7-day rotations per month on a 7/7 schedule: 7 days on, followed by 7 days off, followed by 7 days on, and so on.
      • Part-time: The part-time schedule consists of one 7-day rotation per month: 7 days on, followed by 3 weeks off, followed by 7 days on, and so on.
      • For our casual staff, we ask for 4 days of availability of 24 hours or 8 days of availability of 12 hours per month. During your working days/rotations, the pace of missions is highly variable, due to the unpredictable nature of aeromedical evacuation requirements. Missions vary in number, duration and location, and can arrive at any time of day.
      • Full-time 14/7: The full-time schedule consists of two 14-day rotations, on a 14/7 schedule: 14 days of work followed by 7 days off, followed by 14 days of work, and so on. This schedule is assigned to the Learjet 45XR.

The material and equipment available to our teams are highly varied and adapted to meet all the different types of mission assigned to them. These range from intravenous therapy set-ups to trauma immobilization and intubation equipment. It’s important for us to provide all the equipment you need to carry out your missions, while taking particular care not to overload aircraft unnecessarily, for reasons of weight, efficient use of space and ergonomics.

    • The equipment may be heavier than in hospital, but you’ll mainly be moving it rather than carrying it.
    • Helicopter crews on prehospital missions need to be physically fit, as they may have to transport a patient in an uncontrolled environment over a certain distance (sometimes a few km) and under less-than-optimal conditions (snowshoeing, in the cold, in the mountains, in a wooded area, etc.). Teamwork between pilots and medics supports this type of operation.

On airplanes, we’re more in a controlled environment than in helicopters, but less so than in hospitals. You might have to move a 50 lb bag, but you’re never alone. A number of people are on place (pilots, paramedics, first responders, firefighters, etc.) who can help you load/move the patient and move the equipment. Everything is optimized for teamwork and patient management. You must be able to work in different climatic conditions (hot and cold) and be comfortable working in confined spaces (aircraft).

You will receive support, reinforcement, and development of your knowledge from the medical team throughout your Airmedic career.

When you’re hired, you’ll receive specific aeromedical training to adjust your practice to this new reality. In your first rotations, you will be paired with a mentor until you are able to gain your ease and confidence, and master the basics of aeromedicine. In the first year, you’ll be offered a variety of continuing education courses, both recognized and unrecognized by professional associations. All our missions are reviewed by our team leaders, who also support you in continuous improvement.

    • For pilots, we comply with Transport Canada regulations.
    • For medics, we respect an 8-hour minimum rest period. However, whenever possible, we try to offer a similar rest time to pilots who are legislated by Transport Canada (10hrs).

Yes, you will be deployed to various Airmedic service points in Quebec, depending on demand. A residence for employees is dedicated to our personnel on mission and organized in advance. Teams are also provided with an Airmedic vehicle.

Yes, you may have to share a residence with other employees. However, you will always have access to your own private room.

For regular staff (full-time and part-time), the uniform provided includes pants with multiple pockets, short- and long-sleeved polo shirts, a fleece jacket, a toque and a waterproof coat. For occasional staff, we have a “flightsuit” uniform and parkas for you to pick up before you leave on a mission. When you return from your mission, these are washed before being ready for use again.

On every mission, you should bring a 24h bag. This bag of personal items will be useful in the event of unforeseen circumstances requiring you to take your rest elsewhere than on your base. During your integration, we will advise you on what it should contain.

You will have the opportunity to work with individual members, corporate members, dispensaries from various healthcare centers, and many others throughout your Airmedic career. Airmedic serves the entire territory of Québec, Canada, and international locations. In Canada, Indigenous communities, mining companies, forestry companies, outdoor enthusiasts, and regional social service centers are just a few examples of the clientele served by Airmedic.

A team is available 24/7 to provide presence and support to field teams when needed.

Airmedic operates 6 points of service. Saint-Hubert, Québec City, Saint-Honoré (Saguenay), Sept-Îles, La Romaine, Blanc-Sablon and several other long-term deployment locations, depending on demand.

Airmedic operates a fleet of over a dozen aircraft. Throughout your Airmedic career, you will have the opportunity to work on medically equipped helicopters and airplanes, as well as assist with medical repatriations on commercial flights for nursing staff.

Airmedic teams respond to a wide range of clinical situations. ATV/snowmobile accidents, various traumas, cardiac distress, strokes, respiratory issues, psychiatric emergencies, premature labor/pregnancy complications, and COVID-19 are just some of the cases you may encounter during your Airmedic career. Some patients will be stable, while others may be in critical condition.
