When will Quebec implement a helicopter solution for emergency medical transport?
SAINT-HUBERT, QC, September 14 – 2020 –For Air Ambulance Week, Airmedic highlights that a helicopter-based solution remains absent from Quebec’s public network. Quebec is the only Canadian province without a helicopter service integrated into its healthcare system. This situation is concerning, especially since 911 services do not cover 75% of Quebec’s territory.
Airmedic, a Quebec company specialized in helicopter medical transport, believes it is time to accelerate the shift toward efficient air solutions for rapid patient care. This applies to both prehospital evacuations and interfacility transports.
In emergency medicine, every minute counts
Indeed, according to the “golden hour” principle, care provided within the first hour after trauma is critical. A rapid air medical response increases survival rates, reduces hospital stays, limits permanent injuries, and decreases healthcare costs.
With a complete fleet of six air ambulances and three helicopters, Airmedic can intervene anywhere in Quebec. These aircraft contain advanced equipment and rank among the world’s best for emergency air medical transport. Airmedic positions its aircraft across Quebec using seven operational bases. Helicopters are particularly effective for distances between 75 and 275 kilometres from a specialized hospital. The aircraft fleet covers distances beyond 275 kilometres.
“Quebec is falling behind in air transport, despite available resources. We will continue our efforts to ensure this service is finally recognized and integrated into the public network,” says Sophie Larochelle, Airmedic Chief Executive Officer. She also acknowledges the professionalism of teams mobilized 365 days a year.
