Discover the role of a captain on the Pilatus PC-12
One of the most well-known roles at Airmedic is that of the captain. While Airmedic is recognized for its fleet of helicopters dedicated to prehospital interventions, missions requiring an airplane, such as inter-hospital transports, are frequent. Captains, accompanied by first officers aboard the Pilatus PC-12, must demonstrate resilience, self-control, and maintain a positive attitude while planning and safely managing all aeromedical evacuation flights in close collaboration with both the flight and ground crew.
Vincent Huchot, captain of the Pilatus PC-12, sheds light on the role of a captain at Airmedic.

What does a typical workday look like for you?
Most of our operations are on call. We receive a call from the emergency center explaining our mission. With my first officer, we review the weather and flight conditions, then give the green light to the center. Once the green light is given, the entire team works toward a single goal: completing our mission safely.
-
What is something people don’t usually know about your job?
The pilot profession is very stereotyped in the public eye. However, our role doesn’t stop at just flying the plane. Most of our work happens before the flight. Flight planning, weather assessment, legal documents, and coordination between different departments are also key responsibilities of pilots.

The greatest advantage is certainly the beautiful landscapes and the adventure we experience every day. Frequently facing challenging weather conditions and critically ill patients allows for tremendous personal growth.
-
What do you like the most about your job?
The strongest aspect of my job is teamwork. Seeing that encouragement within the team and our determination lead to successful missions gives us a huge sense of satisfaction.
-
What motivates you to come to work in the morning?
The sunrise at 25,000 feet is truly different from what you see in traffic on the way to work. Therefore, the feeling of flying over North America is a privilege, and I enjoy it every day.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue your career?
The best advice I can give is to believe in yourself. Passion and determination often push us to exceed our limits and step out of our comfort zone. It’s by aiming higher that we grow.
