Make a makeshift stove in just a few minutes
That’s it, winter is officially here! With temperatures dropping day by day, winter camping enthusiasts need to be extra resourceful to stay warm. One of the most effective solutions? Make a makeshift stove out of simple materials. This small improvised stove not only allows you to cook your meals, but also to keep warm during a trip in nature.
Why make a mini stove?
When you go on an expedition where the weight of your equipment is not an issue, building a small portable heating system can be a real asset. It provides a constant, safe, and economical source of heat. This way, you avoid relying solely on campfires or more complex camping stoves.
Airmedic has found a simple, economical, and effective model that you can test on your next outdoor outing. Plus, it only takes a few minutes to make a makeshift stove, and once it’s done, all it takes is a small spark to keep it burning for hours.
Required materials
To assemble a makeshift stove, you will need a few easy-to-find items:
- A metal container with a lid that can hold a roll of toilet paper (e.g., a 500 g metal coffee can);
- A roll of toilet paper;
- Rubbing alcohol, fondue fuel, or methyl hydrate.
Steps to follow:
-
Carefully remove the cardboard tube from the center of the toilet paper roll.
-
Insert the roll into the metal can.
-
If the paper does not touch the edge, add a little more to the bottom of the can.
-
Soak everything in your homemade fuel (alcohol or fuel) until saturated.
That’s it! You have just made a makeshift stove that can burn for several hours with a single spark.
Safety tips
When using it, light it carefully so as not to burn yourself. It is therefore recommended that you place it on a flat surface to avoid accidentally knocking it over while it is lit. If you are using it in a shelter, make sure you always leave an opening to allow air to circulate. This will prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
When you want to extinguish it, simply blow on the flames. Then, once the box has cooled down, close the lid to prevent the alcohol from evaporating.
